How to Use the Lifeaz Fully Automatic AED in a Cardiac Emergency

✔ Immediate Actions in a Cardiac Emergency

When responding to a suspected cardiac arrest, follow these critical steps before using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator):

  • Check for safety: Ensure the scene is safe before approaching the victim.
  • Assess the victim: Try to get a response by speaking loudly and gently shaking their shoulders.
  • Open the airway: Check for obstructions and listen for normal breathing for 10 seconds.
  • Call emergency services: If the victim is not breathing or breathing abnormally, begin CPR immediately and call for an AED.

✔ Applying the Lifeaz AED

Once the Lifeaz AED arrives, it is crucial to apply it as quickly as possible:

  1. Turn on the AED by pressing the green power button and follow the voice prompts.
  2. Remove any clothing from the chest area to ensure direct contact with the AED pads.
  3. Inspect the chest for pacemakers, medical patches, or excess hair that may interfere with pad placement.
  4. Apply the AED pads as shown in the diagram:
    • One pad just below the right collarbone.
    • The other pad under the left armpit.
    • For infants and children, place one pad on the front of the chest and one on the back.
  5. Ensure firm contact to allow effective electrical conduction.

✔ AED Shock Delivery

The Lifeaz AED will automatically analyse the heart rhythm and instruct you on the next steps:

  • If a shock is required, the AED will deliver the shock automatically—no need to press a button.
  • If no shock is advised, continue CPR as instructed.

✔ Performing CPR with an AED

After delivering a shock or if no shock is advised, the AED will guide you to perform CPR at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute:

  • Perform 30 chest compressions, followed by 2 rescue breaths if trained.
  • If not comfortable giving breaths, continue with chest compressions only.
  • The AED will reanalyse the heart rhythm every two minutes.
  • Continue CPR until medical professionals arrive or the patient shows signs of life.

✔ Key Takeaways

  • Using an AED quickly can significantly increase survival chances during cardiac arrest.
  • The Lifeaz AED is fully automatic, meaning it delivers a shock without needing user intervention.
  • Stay calm, follow the voice prompts, and trust the AED to guide you through the emergency.

Even if you are unfamiliar with a specific AED model, they all work similarly. Turn it on and follow the instructions. If using a semi-automatic AED, you will need to press the shock button when prompted.
